The overwhelming majority of eyewear products are manufactured in China, and most designer eyewear components originate in China and are assembled in the country of the designer. By contrast, this new factory space in the northwest suburbs of Illinois makes frames locally from beginning to end. The design of the space needed to be similarly unique. Our concept took the very process-driven making of eyewear and physically mapped that process on the existing space plan. The client was instrumental in explaining the most efficient flow for eyeglass production. The process path created architectural forms to house different steps of making the eyewear, and the resultant forms reflect themselves on the demising wall between the factory and the warehouse. Visitors to the space experience the two sides of the wall quite differently.
