Recovery is not the end of training — it is its most critical phase. Edge Athlete Lounge is built around that idea, designed to give Chicago's elite endurance athletes a space that takes restoration as seriously as performance.

Housed in a converted warehouse, the design transforms an undeveloped two-story shell into a layered environment where activity, recovery, and community are woven together compactly. From the outset, the client's vision went beyond services — Edge was conceived as a gathering place for education, discussion, and shared experience as much as a training facility. The design holds both ambitions at once, finding the spatial logic that makes each stronger for the presence of the other.

The recovery area sits at the heart of the plan, physically wrapped and protected by every other program element. The decision is deliberate: an athlete is most vulnerable during recovery, and the architecture responds accordingly — creating a core that feels sheltered and purposeful, insulated from the energy surrounding it. Moving outward, zones for cycling, nutrition, and social interaction flex easily for group meetings, demonstrations, and lectures, giving the space a communal dimension that a conventional gym could never achieve.

Natural vertical light fills the two-story volume from above, animating every zone throughout the day. Materials do the work of definition — barnwood wraps the cycling spaces, leather grounds the social areas, and clean white individual shower rooms provide contrast and calm — giving a converted warehouse the warmth and specificity of a purpose-built interior.

Edge Athlete Lounge makes the case that the best athletic facilities are not the most intense — they are the ones that understand recovery, community, and performance as a single continuous act.
