EUROPA HQ
VERNON HILLS, IL
The business of sight deserves a building that understands it. Europa's new corporate headquarters is designed around a single organizing truth: vision and natural light create perception — and both can be shaped and made richer through deliberate form.
After years of success designing and representing eyewear, Europa sought to expand with an attached production facility and a headquarters worthy of its creative ambitions. Four distinct program needs had to be reconciled — design studios, public meeting and display spaces, executive offices, and product processing — each with its own character and relationship to the people who use it. Without a unifying idea, these elements risked producing a building that felt more like an office park than a place where vision is the daily work.
The design takes its organizing concept directly from the product itself. Eyeglasses correct and enhance vision mechanically; architecture corrects and enhances light through form. Just as a lens gathers and redirects light to sharpen perception, a skylight gathers and redirects daylight to animate space. Existing skylights are combined with new ones, using light from above as the thread that ties every program element together throughout the day.
Moving through the building, light behaves differently in every room — pooling, raking, diffusing — as the skylights respond to the spaces below. In the main conference room, a giant curving skylight appears as though the ceiling was pinched and pulled toward the sky. Staff and community spaces are positioned for light, views, and flexibility — equally suited to quiet work and social gatherings.
The material palette — wood, concrete, tile, and sisal — is deliberately tactile and visually dense. These surfaces interact with light rather than simply receive it: warm at noon, cool at dusk, textured in shadow. Together they engage the full range of perception — not just sight, but touch, temperature, and time of day.
Europa's headquarters makes the argument that a workplace built around light and vision doesn't just support creative work — it affects the very way it is perceived.
