FRESH MOVES 2.0

A bus painted in vivid color moves through neighborhoods where fresh food has never reliably arrived. Its presence alone is an act of optimism — and everything inside it is an act of design.

Fresh Moves 2.0 is the conversion of a decommissioned bookmobile, donated by the City of Chicago to Growing Power — now Urban Growers Collective — an urban agriculture organization rooted in the city's South Side. The bus makes daily runs from UGC's urban farms to stops across the South and West Sides, all in food desert areas where locally grown produce is rarely, if ever, available. The project extended well past the conventional boundaries of architecture: it required RV mechanics, graffiti artists, skilled craftspeople, fabricators, and community organizers — nearly all of whom donated their time and expertise to see it become a reality.

The problem was as clear as it was urgent. Entire communities lacked reliable access to fresh, healthy food grown nearby — while urban farms capable of supplying it existed just miles away. The gap was not agricultural. It was logistical, spatial, and systemic. The design's task was to close it with whatever was available, for as little as possible, and make the result beautiful enough to demand attention.

The interior was reimagined with re-used and re-engineered wire shelving mounted on new plywood vertical supports — salvaging as much as possible from other vehicles and projects. Every material decision was driven by resourcefulness rather than budget. The result is a compact, accessible market interior equipped with a wheelchair lift, designed for daily use and easy restocking straight from the farm. Reuse is not a constraint here — it is the entire logic of the project.

Outside, the bus announces itself. Collaborations with Chicago graffiti artist Slang transformed the exterior into a moving canvas of vibrant color and bold graphics — beautiful art carrying healthy food, a positive spectacle by its very presence in the neighborhoods it serves. The bus does not blend in. It is meant to be seen, recognized, and anticipated.

Fresh Moves 2.0 has been exhibited at the Cooper Hewitt Museum, the Museum of Design Atlanta, and the 2017 AIA National Conference. The bus is still in operation.

A decommissioned bus, donated shelving, volunteered expertise, and a city full of people who needed what it carries — Fresh Moves 2.0 proves that the most powerful design isn't always built from the ground up. Sometimes it's already on the road, waiting to be reimagined.
